GIS (Geographic Information Systems)-Importing Maps?

Please only coherent step by step detailed answers! I need to use Heidelberg, Germany in a project for school. How can I get a map to use? I just need the city, so do I need to import a map (if so, from where), are there preexisting maps in the database already (if so how would I access that)? Please...please help.
